FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can you help me identify what my child's specific Special Educational Needs are?

SEND@Heart can most certainly HELP you but not diagnose specific needs. Careful listening to your journey and hearing how your child presents will help us guide you toward the right services to make such diagnoses (if any). However, having SEND does not always mean there is a diagnosis. We can talk through this and support best next steps.

Can you help me navigate the SEND system?

Navigating the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system can feel overwhelming, but you're not alone. SEND@Heart offers unwavering, empathetic support and valuable information to help your child thrive. Personalised consultations will guide you through the complexities of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system, offering reassurance every step of the way.

How can you assist with me to understand what my child's support is/should be at school ?

As an experienced and accomplished SENDCO, a realistic analysis of additional needs is core to both my experience and my purpose. SEND@Heart  offers an unbiased view based on the information you provide, in helping you to better understand your child in order to get the right support at school e.g. the implementation and reviewing of IEPs, provision maps etc. Bear in mind, what you may think your child needs might be contrary to what will actually best support their progress. SEND@Heart is commited to open, honest and clear discussion. All communication centres around what is best for the child. SEND@Heart is NOT about "joining forces" against the school. Successful SEND outcomes are hugely dependent on working WITH the school and other services for a joined up, consistent and strategic support system, tailored to the needs of the child. With SEND@Heart you will find a compassionate, listening ear if perhaps there may be breakdowns in communication and or relationships. Robust guidance on next steps can lead to joined up engagement and improved access for your child.

Do you offer personal coaching or mentoring for parents, e.g. managing behavioural challenges.

Yes, SEND@Heart is passionate about well-being, both yours and your child's. Personalised coaching and mentoring will support you in meeting parenting challenges, especially when there is SEND but not exclusively. Advice offered is practical, sensible, jargon-free and easy to follow. The ultimate goal is longer term rather than paying for a quick fix of a current situation. Let SEND@Heart help you feel better equipped with this enormous and amazing lifelong task of raising your child to be all that they were born to be (and keep sane doing it!).

Are you able to help me create child-specific strategies to support progress and remove barriers to learning?

Yes of course! Strategies are specifically designed to support your child's progress and address any barriers to learning they may be facing, guiding the steps towards them reaching their full potential.

Can you help me prepare for meetings with the school?

Absolutely, SEND@Heart  can assist you in preparing for meetings with guidance on key questions to ask and how to effectively communicate your child's needs and goals. Please note that this does not mean physical attendance at meetings with you. There is nothing wrong with taking an advocate to what can sometimes be challenging and emotionally confronting meetings especially when it concerns your own child. However, the main goal for SEND@Heart  would be to coach you, empower you and equip you to manage such events with confidence and know how. Ultimately you want to be working WITH the school so that the consistent approach from home and school and across other professionals, creates a stable and comprehensive plan of action for your child.

Can you help simplify the process of applying for an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP)?

Absolutely, navigating the EHCP application process can indeed feel overwhelming, but you are not alone. With extensive expertise and experience SEND@Heart offers you comprehensive support and guidance to ensure your child's needs are met effectively.

Support can be:

  • Understanding the initial steps and answering your questions on what to expect from the process. This includes advising on whether an EHCP is actually needed (a difficult no sometimes!)
  • Checking your draft application and advice on gaps and necessary amendments. Writing an effective EHCP application is crucial to ensuring your child receives the support they need. SEND@Heart will advise you on whether your application is compelling, has sufficient and or strong evidence, and whether your costings are detailed and justified enough to ensure success. Let us help alleviate the stress of the application process, to ensure that you advocate for the best possible outcomes for your child's educational journey.
  • Meticulously reviewing your draft EHCP. Once you receive a draft EHCP from the LA, SEND@Heart can assist with providing feedback on areas to amend, review, or remove before accepting it as final. Your child's EHCP must be thorough, effectively supporting their educational and developmental needs.
  • Write the application on your behalf. If you prefer to leave the EHCP application process to the experts, SEND@Heart  will do it all for you! This is as long as you are able to provide ALL the necessary information. We offer a complete application service, ensuring all necessary information is included and advocating for the best possible outcomes for your child.

Disclaimer:  There is no guarantee that an application for an EHCP will lead to an EHCP. Rest assured that SEND@Heart can make a robust case/application with the right information in hand. Support can also be offered in the follow-up should an application not be successful.

Can you help clarify what Specialist's Report mean for provision at my child's school?

Absolutely, SEND@Heart here to demystify this for you, providing clear explanations and guidance on how your child's school can support these provisions. The aim is to ensure that you feel informed and empowered to make informed decisions for your child's educational needs, ultimately leading to their success and wellbeing.
